Data Matrix codes: Pinocchio

One of these codes is printed on the bottom of the box, next to the barcode.

LEGO prints a different code for each production batch and region, which is why one item has several. The scanner recognises all 3.

About this minifigure

He arrives as one of the fairytale characters Farquaad banishes to the swamp, and stays with the crew for the sequels. The gag is played for laughs rather than a moral, and it lands best in the second film, during the escape from the dungeon, when he tries to wriggle out of a very simple question.

A child will find the character familiar even without knowing Shrek, because Pinocchio has been part of the culture for generations. That helps in play: the figure fits a swamp scene and the classic wooden-boy story equally well, and the prop, a nose that grows, needs no explanation at all.

In this set he belongs with the swamp residents. Together with Gingy and the Big Bad Wolf they make up the background the leads would otherwise be performing without. Take them away and the swamp is just a green field with a hut on it.

Did you know: Carlo Collodi's novel about Pinocchio appeared in book form in 1883, long before cinema existed.
