Alpine

While the Renault name is familiar from ordinary traffic, Alpine is the badge the company keeps for sport, and the blue car carrying it comes from a team that has been racing far longer than the name suggests.

Data Matrix codes: Alpine

One of these codes is printed on the bottom of the box, next to the barcode.

LEGO prints a different code for each production batch and region, which is why one item has several. The scanner recognises all 3.

About this minifigure

Alpine is Renault's sports brand, although the team racing under the badge works out of Enstone in England. That same factory, under earlier names, won championships and grands prix long before anybody connected Formula 1 with Alpine. Its history runs longer than that of most teams on the current grid.

The blue livery with pink sponsor accents keeps the car from vanishing into the crowd, even though children point at it far less often than at the Ferrari or the McLaren. When you are completing the set, that counts as good news rather than bad.

If somebody in the house follows the French drivers, or simply likes a less obvious pick, this model has real charm. It is also a reminder that Formula 1 does not end with the top three teams in the table, and it is worth tracking down for the contrast with the British half of the grid alone.

Did you know: The Enstone team, known today as Alpine, won championships as Benetton with Michael Schumacher and as Renault with Fernando Alonso.
