About this vehicle
A weight hangs on a line and knocks down whatever has outlived its usefulness. Every other machine in this set puts something together; this one does the opposite, and the contrast gives it more character than any of them. For plenty of children it is the single reason another box gets opened.
The play is all in the red knob at the back. Turn it and the superstructure swings left and right, while the weight on its line behaves exactly as it ought to, which is to say entirely unpredictably. Children find the function hard to put down, because you can never quite call where the ball will settle once you stop turning.
Worth knowing: wrecking balls are a rarity on modern sites, where demolition is handled mostly by excavators fitted with long booms and crushing attachments. That only sharpens the appeal, since the machine survives mainly in films and old newsreels, and here it shrinks to the size of a hand.
